Just like in cybersecurity, enterprises need structured processes (playbooks) for testing generative AI systems against adversarial use, hallucination, and safety failures — but very few have formalized this yet. - Auditable model lineages (provenance, bias checks)
Knowing where a model’s data came from, how it was trained, and what bias or drift might be present is essential for compliance, trust, and risk management. Right now, many models are opaque in their origins and training processes.
Vendors must step up:
- Open, standardized security tooling (no more black boxes)
Tools to monitor, secure, and evaluate AI systems should be interoperable and open — not proprietary, obscure, or vendor-locked. This is still a major gap, especially in enterprise-scale solutions. - Shared threat intelligence (like CVE for AI vulnerabilities)
The AI space lacks a common framework for disclosing, sharing, and remediating known issues (e.g., a CVE system for prompt exploits, model leaks, etc.). Establishing this would greatly enhance collective resilience.
The Silent Killers: Data Debt and Talent Gaps
AI is only as good as the data fueling it — and most enterprises are drowning in:
- Siloed, inconsistent data (if your CRM and ERP don’t talk, neither will your AI).
- Unlabeled, biased, or non-compliant datasets (GDPR fines await).
Meanwhile, talent shortages force tough choices:
- Upskill existing teams (AI literacy programs).
- Hire for hybrid roles (e.g., “AI translators” who bridge tech and business).
- Partner strategically (avoid vendor lock-in at all costs).
What Enterprises Need Now
- Model Selection Frameworks — Match models to use cases and risk profiles.
Enterprises need structured decision-making tools that help teams evaluate which models (open vs. closed, small vs. large) are best suited to specific business needs, cost constraints, and risk tolerances — rather than defaulting to the biggest or trendiest. - Platformization — Centralized AI hubs for governance, reuse, and cost control.
Instead of siloed experiments, organizations should build internal AI platforms that standardize tooling, enforce compliance, manage infrastructure, and enable model and component reuse across teams, driving consistency and efficiency. - AI Product Managers — Own the full lifecycle, not just deployment.
AI initiatives need dedicated product leaders who understand both tech and business, guiding models from ideation through development, deployment, user feedback, and continual iteration — not just shipping and forgetting. - Security & Compliance Playbooks — From red-teaming to audit trails.
Enterprises should codify how they secure and govern AI systems with repeatable processes — including adversarial testing, responsible AI assessments, and logs that support internal reviews or external audits. - Open Standards — Fight vendor lock-in with interoperable tools.
Building around open APIs, model formats, and orchestration layers ensures flexibility, reduces dependency on any one vendor, and makes it easier to swap in new models or infrastructure as the market evolves. - Data-Centric AI — Invest in pipelines, not just models.
The real value often lies in how data is collected, labeled, cleaned, and updated — yet too many focus only on model architecture. Strong data pipelines improve performance, reduce bias, and increase business relevance. - FinOps for AI — Monitor, optimize, and forecast costs.
Generative AI costs can spiral quickly. Enterprises need real-time visibility into usage, a strategy for optimization (e.g., model distillation, scheduling), and budgeting tools that align spending with value creation. - Ecosystem Accountability — Vendors, SIs, and hyperscalers must step up.
Model providers, AI app vendors, system integrators, and cloud platforms must go beyond selling tools and capacity — they need to build deep capabilities to help enterprises navigate model selection, governance, cost management, and responsible deployment at scale. This includes providing opinionated guidance, co-creating playbooks, and supporting open standards to reduce complexity and risk. Enterprises need vendors who are aligned with their operating realities and focused on reliability, compliance, and risk mitigation over hype cycles and benchmarks.

AI is moving fast, but speed without control is chaos. The winners won’t just chase benchmarks — they’ll build for:
